FIFA rules out Lukaku’s record due to “off record” friendly.

Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku has not officially broken Belgium’s goalscoring record according to FIFA due to illegitimate hat-trick scored earlier in his career.Lukaku’s winning goal in Belgium’s international friendly against Japan on Tuesday was thought to have made the forward his country’s all-time top scorer, seeing him overtake Bernard Voorhoof and Paul Van Himst to stand alone on 31 goals. However, while the 24-year-old former Everton and Chelsea man and his nation may believe that to be the case, FIFA understood otherwise. That is because football’s governing body FIFA, do not acknowledge one of the matches which helped him reach the total, a friendly in 2014 between Belgium and Luxembourg prior to the World Cup, with Lukaku bagging a hat-trick in a comfortable 5-1 victory. The Red Devils happened to have made seven substitutions when they were only permitted six, leading FIFA to wipe the game from their records, meaning Lukaku only has 28 international goals to his name, according to official documentation, and thus still needs three more to break the record.Nonetheless, it remains a matter of time with the striker likely to continue playing for his country for at least the next eight years.
